Generate Data Integration Layer

The process described in this section validates the data that has been loaded and builds the Data Integration Layer, which is used to populate the cubes in the Planning application

Once the load files have been successfully uploaded, you should perform the steps described below.

Log In to The Web Application

  1. Open Internet Explorer and browse to the client's Data Integration Utility web app location;

    • If Accessing From Local Server: http://localhost/IPStaging

    • If Accessing From Another Computer: http://SERVERNAME/IPStaging

  2. At the login screen, enter the credentials which have been set up:

    • Username: [provided username]

    • Password: [provided password]

  3. You will be taken to the Main screen.

Generate DIL -- No Errors

  1. Click on Generate Data Integration Layer.

  2. Select on an option under "Please Specify What Data Changes Occurred in Staging".

  • Fact Data: Only tables ending with "_Data" were changed

  • Dimensional Data: Only tables not ending with "_Data" were changed

  • Fact and Dimensional Data: Both "_Data" and non-"_Data" tables were changed

  1. Now, select what Stage tables' data changed. If either "Dimensional Data" or "Fact and Dimensional Data" was selected in the prior step, two list boxes should appear (one for dimensional tables and the other for fact tables). Otherwise, just the fact table list box will appear. Once a selection has been made, click Step 1: Validate Staging Data.

    • Intelligent Fact Data Identification: Based on what dimensions the user selects, the fact table list box will update with the fact tables that will have been affected by a dimensional change.

    • "Dimensional Data" or "Fact and Dimensional Data" Selected

    • "Fact Data" Selected

  1. Once the validation process is complete, a new page will appear with "Dimensional Data Options" and a list of Fact Tables to build, based on what Stage fact tables you validated. Select an option from Dimensional Data Options, then click Step 2: Generate Data Integration Layer.

  • Explanations of Dimensional Data Options

  • Build Dimensional Data, Appending Any New Members: Dimensional data (related to the selected fact tables) in the staging tables is compared against what exists in the DIL dimensional tables. If the dimensional member already exists in the DIL, it will not be added. Only members that do not already exist in the DIL are added.

  • Build Dimensional Data, Deleting All Existing Members: Dimensional data (related to the selected fact tables) in the DIL is deleted outright, replaced with the contents of the dimensional data in the staging tables.

  • Do Not Build Dimensional Data, Just Build the Fact Table(s):  Dimensional data is left as-is. Only the DIL fact tables will be built. By design, the DIL fact tables' contents for the defined Load Period are deleted first, then the data for the defined load period is generated from the staging tables.

  • Additional Note: If either of the "Build Dimensional Data" options is selected, this implies either a change or a refresh of the dimensional data related to the fact tables selected. Please note when either of these options is selected, if a dimension is shared across fact tables, the other fact tables will be rebuilt by default in order to update the references to the newly built dimensional data.

  • Example: If the program identifies that the Office dimension must be rebuilt or updated, it will, by design, fire off rebuilds for WIP_AR_Fact, FTE_Fact, GL_Journal_Entries_Fact, and Asset_Data_Fact.

  1. A textbox entitled "Integration Layer Results" will display. You may rebuild more fact tables by repeating the process outlined above and clicking on Step 2: Generate Data Integration Layer. Optionally, you may restart the data validation process by clicking on the Restart Validation Process link, which will take you back to Step 2.

  • In the Integration Results textbox, you may see the operations which have occurred, which may include a delete of the DIL data (if you checked off the option in Step 3). You may see how many rows were inserted to the dimension and fact data as well.

  • Once this is complete, you may go ahead and rebuild the cubes that hook up to this DIL.
