proCube Installation Requirements

proCube consists of two primary components:the proCube client and the proCube server both of which are available in 32-bit or 64-bit editions. The proCube client, which consists of proCube Management Studio and proCube Excel Integration, is used on the workstation to connect to a proCube server and to view and write data. The server component, proCube Server, manages shared databases. For small systems and/or training purposes, both components can be installed on a standalone workstation. To facilitate diagnostic work, both the proCube client and the proCube server are installed on a server.

This topic provides an overview of the system requirements, installation, and networking components necessary to implement proCube. Step-by-step instructions on how to install proCube client and proCube server are found in Installing proCube.

With proCube 64-bit edition, the maximum RAM that is supported for a single instance of proCube is determined by the Windows OS. For instance, Windows 2008 Enterprise can handle up to 2 TB of RAM.

Hardware and software requirements for proCube 32-bit

Servers and clients must be running TCP/IP. In order for a client to open a database on the server, the host name must be mapped to an IP address through WINS, DNS or by adding an entry in the client's HOSTS file.

Your performance under specific configurations may vary greatly depending upon your usage. Accessing large quantities of data may require more memory and disk space than the recommended configurations listed in this topic.

proCube Management Studio and proCube Excel Integration

proCube Management Studio together with an Excel integration lets power users get the most out of both products. The following list outlines the recommended configuration required to successfully run the proCube Management Studio and proCube Excel Integration:

  • 2 GHz or greater with 2 GB RAM or more
  • 250 MB free hard disk space
  • Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP
  • Microsoft Excel 2010, Microsoft Excel 2007 (with a minimum of Service Pack 2) or Microsoft Excel 2003 (with a minimum of Service Pack 3)
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

proCube Excel Integration

The proCube Excel integration lets users work solely in Excel yet still benefit from proCube connectivity. The following list outlines the recommended configuration required to successfully run the proCube Excel Add-In:

  • 2 GHz or greater with 1 GB RAM or more
  • 200 MB free hard disk space
  • Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP SP2
  • Microsoft Excel 2010, Microsoft Excel 2007 (with a minimum of Service Pack 2) or Microsoft Excel 2003 (with a minimum of Service Pack 3)
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

proCube server

The following outlines the recommended configuration required to successfully run the proCube Server:

  • Dedicated Physical Server. Do not share this server with other applications.
  • Intel Quad Core Processor 2.0 GHz or greater with 16 GB RAM (4-GB RAM per proCube Instance is recommended).
  • Storage Array Controller with 512MB Cache and Battery Backed Controller.
  • 20 GB free hard disk space.
  • Windows 2003 SP2 Enterprise Edition, Windows 2003 SP2 Standard 64-bit, Windows 2008 Enterprise, or Windows 2008 Standard 64-bit. (the 64-bit version of Windows is recommended).
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.

With proCube 32-bit edition, a single instance of proCube Server can use a maximum of 2 GB of RAM on a 32-bit edition of Windows and a maximum of 4 GB of RAM on a 64-bit edition of Windows.

Hardware and software requirements for proCube 64-bit

Servers and clients must be running TCP/IP. In order for a client to open a database on the server, the host name must be mapped to an IP address through WINS, DNS or by adding an entry in the client's HOSTS file.

Your performance under specific configurations may vary greatly depending upon your usage. Accessing large quantities of data may require more memory and disk space than the recommended configurations listed in this topic.

For the Excel 2003 Add-in to run properly with proCube V8, you must install Microsoft Excel 2003, Service Pack 3, and the Microsoft patch KB907417. Go to microsoft.com and search on KB907417 to download the patch. Microsoft.com explains the situation with Excel 2003 as follows: "Microsoft has released an update for Microsoft Office Excel 2003 and for Microsoft Office Word 2003. This update corrects a potential problem in which an add-in, a smart tag, or a smart document may not load if it uses the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0."

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

proCube server

The following outlines the recommended configuration required to successfully run the proCube Server:

  • Dedicated Physical Server. Do not share this server with other applications.
  • Intel Quad Core Processor 2.0 GHz or greater with 32 GB RAM (8 GB RAM per proCube instance is recommended).
  • Storage Array Controller with 512MB Cache and Battery Backed Controller.
  • 20 GB free hard disk space.
  • Windows 2008 Standard 64-bit (recommended) or Windows 2003 SP2 Standard 64-bit.
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
  • 64-bit ODBC Drivers (if using proCube Xchange)

Requirements for proCube networking components

proCube is a client/server application that communicates over TCP/IP. Both the clients and the Server must be configured for TCP/IP. You can connect to the Server using either the server name, which is the actual name of the Windows 2000/2003/2008 Server, or the TCP/IP address. If you are using the server name, the server name must be registered with a Domain Name System (DNS) in order for clients to be able to resolve the IP address from the server name. Alternatively, an entry can be added to the client’s local HOSTS file.

The TCP/IP ports for client and server are:

  • The default TCP/IP port through which the proCube client communicates to the proCube Server is TCP/IP port 34323.
  • The server communicates back to the client via TCP/IP port 34324.

Requirements for proCube Xchange database support

Maintaining Xchange support for proCube places several demands on the database side.

Working with ODBC and Xchange

Xchange uses ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) to connect to relational databases in order to create, populate, and update cubes. proCube supports the following databases and their associated vendor-specific ODBC drivers:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or higher
  • IBM DB2
  • Oracle 7.x or greater
  • Microsoft Access 2000 and greater

In addition, proCube provides generic support for other ODBC drivers not listed above.

proCube Server 64-bit edition requires the use of 64-bit ODBC drivers. These drivers must be present on the server in order to use proCube Xchange.
